Flavored Coffees

While it is no secret that coffee is a marvelous
beverage just as it comes from the roasted and ground bean, the
popularity of flavored coffees indicates that coffee lovers are
often adventurous and love to try new twists on an old favorite.
Different coffee varieties have flavor notes of their own, such
as the Mokka coffees so named because they naturally have a hint
of chocolate flavor, but mostly when we say flavored coffees, we
mean any type of coffee to which spices or other flavorings have
been added.
Coffee is believed to have first been used by the Arab
population in Ethiopia and Yemen and it was not long before they
began adding spices to enhance and change the flavor of their
natural beans. One of the most famous examples is Turkish
coffee to which ground cardamon seed is added. (Turkish coffee is not
one special bean, it is actually a brewing method.) |

Now people all over the world add spices to
their coffees or purchase flavored coffee to which spices
have already been added. Certain spices are often associated
with specific holidays and many flavored coffees are made to
conform to this, such as a pumpkin pie flavored coffee for
Thanksgiving season. Some people prefer to add their own
spices or spice blends at home to achieve the exact taste
that they desire. This can be complex, or as simple as
adding a stick of cinnamon as a stirrer. |

On of the most popular of the flavored
coffees is the chocolate blended variety. Chocolate and
coffee are natural flavor soul mates and the mocha
coffee-chocolate blend in many forms is famous and popular
nearly everywhere. Some mocha style flavored coffees have
chocolate essences added to the hot beans to permeate them
with the flavor, while others add actual cacao nibs to the
coffee beans to be ground and brewed along with them. Others
prefer to add actual chocolate or cocoa after the coffee is
brewed.
Nut flavored coffees are also very popular. Almond is
another excellent flavor to twin with coffee and may be
plain or designed to suggest the flavor of Amaretto. Pecan
also blends well with coffee and makes a delicious cup, as
does the very well received hazelnut. A great way to use nut
flavors is to pair them with other flavors such as
chocolate, vanilla, or spice.
Candy flavors are another type of coffee flavor that gets
a great deal of attention. In addition to chocolate, flavors
such as toffee also enhance the flavor and aroma of coffee.
Bold flavors like peppermint also intrigue the more
adventurous. Whether you buy your flavored coffees ready to
brew or design your own, they are a very special treat.
